A Message To Parents

I'm seventeen, and I'm about to graduate high school. I have been homeschooled most of my life, and I've never been to a public high school. I'm a huge homeschooling advocate, and I recommend it to EVERYONE.

The sad thing, something that really troubles me about youth today, is that even teens who go to church regularly are affected by the stuff in public schools, and in the media. Even though I've never been to a highschool, my christian friends are bringing into the church and around me. Even if you're not a christian, do you want your kids listening to songs like "I Just Had Sex" or "S&M" by Rihanna (which has lyrics like: "'Cause I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it, Sex in the air, I don't care, I love the smell of it, Sticks and stones may break my bones, But chains and whips excite me.")? I don't think so. I know twelve year old's and younger that listen to this stuff. Lady Gaga is another terrible influence...not only is she so NOT modest, her songs are also satanic. And she doesn't hide it. Problem is, she's huge in the music industry right now.

I think my point, first of all, is that parents need to step up. Do you really know what your kids are listening to? What they're reading and saying? One great thing about homeschooling is you're truly a part of your kids life, a big part. You have more say than the media. When a kid is in public school for the majority of the day, the school and the other kids get to dictate what's going into their head. Even if homeschooling isn't an option, parents need to stop trying to be cool and start being parents.

Second of all, there needs to be a change. In the media, in schools... the message being spread is not good.

Magazines Today

Everyone has seen the magazine racks at your grocery store, gas stations, and shopping centers. We've seen the covers, which feature low cut tops and immodest celebrities. We know the covers are terrible enough. But what about the content inside? Do they have any good advice? Ha...I'd have to say no.

First of all, the fashion tips are going to be much like whatever is on the cover. Low cut, too tight, or extremely short. That's what people think is fashion nowadays. Then you've got the romance tips. Oh where to begin...you've got those previews on the front about 60 sex tips and blah blah blah. Now, I believe in purity until marriage. It's what God wants, and it just makes sense. But the media portrays it as guys should hook up with as many hot girls as possible before you get stuck settling down. How false is that? Girls don't want a player. They want respect. At least, any self-respecting girl does. You can't get respect unless you first respect yourself.
Anyway, the magazines promote sex before marriage and immodesty. So who's reading these articles? Well, along with adult women, young teenage girls are reading them. Pre-teens are reading them. 10, 11, 12...14, 15, 16. Are you monitoring what you're kids are reading? What they're being influenced by?

Something to think about.
